SUARAJATIM - On 5 January 2025, the serene island of Bawean welcomed Australian tourists from the Coral Geographer cruise ship for an enlightening mangrove conservation program. Collaborating with Baweantourism and the local Hijau Daun community, this initiative aimed to introduce visitors to the ecological importance of mangroves and the community’s efforts to preserve Bawean’s natural beauty.

The event was led by M. Subhan from Pokmaswas Hijau Daun, a community group dedicated to preserving Bawean’s coastal environment. Participants, including tourists and the Coral Geographer team, explored the role of mangroves in protecting coastal areas from erosion, supporting marine biodiversity, and mitigating climate change.
The group also rolled up their sleeves to plant mangroves along the island’s coastline, fostering a deeper connection with Bawean’s natural environment. "We learned so much about the interconnectedness of mangroves and the livelihoods of local communities. This was more than just an activity—it was an inspiring lesson in sustainability," said one Australian participant.
A Community-Driven Approach
Hijau Daun has been at the forefront of conservation efforts in Bawean, blending environmental protection with local empowerment. Their work includes raising awareness among residents, engaging youth groups, and promoting eco-tourism that benefits the local economy.
M. Subhan emphasised the need for continued collaboration. "We hope this initiative sparks greater interest in Bawean’s eco-tourism and conservation potential. Mangroves are not just a natural resource; they are vital for the future of our island."
Discovering Bawean’s Hidden Wonders
Aside from its mangroves, Bawean is home to attractions like Kastoba Lake, surrounded by lush forest, and Tanjung Gaang, a dramatic coastal area with crystal-clear waters perfect for snorkelling. Visitors can also experience the island’s unique culture, including its traditional dances and crafts.
The Coral Geographer team was equally impressed. "Bawean is a hidden treasure. The dedication of the local community to preserving its natural and cultural heritage is something we deeply admire," said a Coral Geographer spokesperson.
